I planning on starting a portfolio website, but I don't like paying for things. Also, I'd rather write the site myself than use the "out-of-the-box" online editors that companies like googlesites force you to use.
Any suggestions?

I was hoping somebody else would help you here... I have no experience with free webhosting, all websites i've ever owned have been hosted by my friends who own their own servers

if you do find one of these to be really good though, let us know so that other people may have an easier time figuring out where to host their art

I do web-design as my job during the summer... I do all of my coding in notepad because I am too lazy to install Frontpage or Dreamweaver... I find that I ahve more control doing it like that anyways, as you don't have the damn program trying to write code that you would want in your stylesheet as opposed to your HTML

That's neat,
I've heard that it's usually best just to do contents and tables in HTML and put all the nifty stuff (like the finer points of font, color, margins and stuff) in CSS, zat true?

yes

all you really need in the HTML is the base code of stuff in the page... in the CSS you can add images, change colors, change fonts... do basically anything
